Malta’s wealth is creeping up to the EU average, standing just four percentage points below, according to Eurostat.

The member states wealth taking into account the amount of people that live there – GDP per capita – ranges dramatically across the 28 countries, from 49 per cent in Bulgaria to 253 per cent in Luxembourg.

Eleven member states recorded a level of GDP per capita above the EU average in 2017.

There was also a wide variation in consumption patterns, which is seen as a measure of households’ wealth. Actual Individual Consumption (AIC) expressed in Purchasing Power Standards (PPS) varied from 55% to 130% of the European Union (EU) average across the Member States.

Malta’s stood at 78 per cent.

Ten member states recorded AIC per capita above the EU average in 2017.
