Established in 1938, the Malta Society for the Protection and Care of Animals depends on the generosity of the general public and of its volunteers – who amount to around 40 – who offer their time in running the rehoming centre and the society’s three charity shops.
The charity shops – one in Sliema and two in Naxxar – generate important revenue streams for the MSPCA, which needs around €140,000 every year to run its Floriana home.
One of the charity shop volunteers, Elaine Levitte, told Senior Times that people donate unwanted items to the MSPCA charity shops. These items – normally consisting of clothes, shoes and toys – are then sorted, cleaned and steamed before being offered for sale.
Last year, the funds raised through its charity shops helped the MSPCA to re-home 43 cats, 20 kittens, 48 adult dogs and 11 puppies, neuter over 400 dogs and cats in the wider community, and also give educational talks in Malta and Gozo to over 3,000 children.
