Further to Mario Dingli’s letter ‘Good news’ of May 27, the move by Bet365 to Malta really has nothing to do with Brexit, much as all ailments are now blamed on Brexit.

Indeed, the company is thinking of relocating its Gibraltar operation to Malta only because of the ‘uncertainty of British overseas territory after Brexit’, as if Spain would even dream of taking on Great Britain on the issue. That means the chances of Bet365 relocating are slim. The fact that the UK government is reviewing betting rules with a view of putting a limit of £2 maximum bet instead of the previous £100, in order to reduce problem gambling, would have a lot to do with that. In fact, it’s reminiscent of the Boris Johnson bendy-bus syndrome – not good enough for UK, dump it on Malta. It smacks of déjà vu!

And, yes, I agree with Dingli; the imaginary surplus (which only the most gullible on the island seem to believe exists) will become a truly greater deficit.

Stick to selling passports for now.
