Transport Minister Ian Borg and Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi yesterday toured roadworks in St Julian’s that caused mayhem last week.

The roadworks were unannounced, as the transport watchdog failed to inform the St Julian’s local council that work on a major road in Paceville would start, resulting in long tailbacks.

The ministers issued a statement yesterday to say that the project, which saw the upgrading of a number of roads in St Julian’s and Paceville, had been completed in just a few days.

They said this project was part of a wider plan to improve the road network in tourism zones.

Dr Mizzi said that following the replenishment of sand in St George’s Bay, the focus had turned to the state of the road network.

Dr Borg said this was just the beginning of work being carried out by Infrastructure Malta, which has taken over the €700 million plan to redo all the roads in the country.

However, the statement did not refer to how the local council and the business community were not informed about the project.

“It’s good that the area is being resurfaced, we’re not complaining about that. But we expected to, at least, be officially informed about Transport Malta’s plans. That way we could have told residents about them,” St Julian’s mayor Guido Dalli told the Times of Malta last week.

He said that when such works were in progress, the council usually sent letters to residents apologising for the inconvenience.
