Two men were hospitalised suffering from grievous injuries following separate arguments in Birkirkara on Friday morning.

District police were forced to intervene after they spotted an argument between two men - a 36, Libyan national living in St Paul's Bay and a 25-year-old Malian national living in Rabat.

Police from the Rapid Intervention Unit were called to the scene where they found the Libyan man had sustained punches during the argument. Police said he had also been struck by an iron bar.

The Malian national is being held by the police.

The incident happened in Triq Santu Rokku at 9.15am.

The second argument, at 11.30am, was between a 63-year-old man from Birkirkara and a 44-year-old man from St Paul's Bay. It happened in Main Street.

The police said the elder man was allegedly hit by a hard object and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital.
