Although Maltese politicians had offered assistance to the 629 migrants stranded off Malta, God should guide them to ensure that their future decisions were in line with the extraordinary humanity for which the country is known, the Bishops of Malta said.

Weighing in on the controversy still raging after the Italian Interior Minister closed the country’s ports to the NGO ship carrying the migrants, Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Bishop Mario Grech said that European politicians should find a humanitarian solution to the issue, without overlooking the realities being faced by their citizens.

They said that Europe had faced a similar situation in the past but had managed to deal with it in a way that was in line with the principles of justice, solidarity and law.
