The following expression has been attributed to two very different sources, Voltaire and the Spiderman comic book:

“The people’s representatives will reach their destination, invested with the highest confidence and unlimited power. They will show great character. They must consider that great responsibility follows inseparably from great power. To their energy, to their courage and, above all, to their prudence, they shall owe their success and their glory.”

A similar precursor appeared in a well-known biblical verse, Luke 12:48:

“But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

I believe these words apply to all people in power and, hence, administer authority over others. Power demands responsibility, from power follows responsibility. God will punish those who abuse their power and, thus, fail to act responsibly (Luke 12:48).
