An area in Marsaxlokk Bay has been designated as Malta's first official swimming zone for horses.

The zone was inaugurated on Monday morning by Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Welfare Clint Camilleri, who said an electoral pledge was being implemented.

The site was picked in consultation with the Department of Public Health.

During the inauguration, the parliamentary secretary also told reporters that he had requested the Animal Welfare Department and the police to investigate unofficial horse races on the Mrieħel Bypass after footage uploaded on social media on Sunday.
