The Manoel Theatre will tomorrow present a concert titled Tehillim – 20th Century Masterworks.

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brno Contemporary Orchestra from the Czech Republic will be under the baton of Pavel Šnajdr, who is flying to Malta especially for the concert.

The programme features Octandre by Edgard Varèse, Chamber Concerto for 13 Instruments by György Ligeti, Sinfonietta Op.1 by Benjamin Britten and Tehillim by Steve Reich.

This innovative selection was put together by Ruben Zahra as part of his project Malta Music Days. MMD is behind other upcoming musical events, including Ritual, Parade & the Velvet Gentleman and Trios.

“We always try to bring something completely new to the table,” says composer Zahra. “With this concert, we are creating an opportunity for local musicians to tackle 20th-century music with proper professional pedagogy and coaching. It would have been easier to bring in the whole ensemble from the Czech Republic but MMD is connecting local musicians with international artists to foster contemporary music in Malta, as well as invest in the legacy of this repertoire.

“We are also presenting a programme that has never been heard here before, and which will hopefully encourage music lovers to consider this fantastic period from musical history.”

Tehillim – 20th Century Masterworks will be held at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta, tomorrow at 8.30pm. Tickets may be obtained online at www.teatrumanoel.com.mt. Modern Music Days is part of the Valletta 2018 cultural programme and is organised by Manoel Theatre, the Malta Association for Contemporary Music and the Valletta 2018 Foundation.
