Swimmers should steer clear of a number of popular beaches and bays as strong easterly winds have made them dangerous for bathing, the Malta Red Cross warned on Thursday.

Għadira Bay, Qawra Bay, Fond Għadir in Sliema, Pretty Bay in Birżebbuġa and Fajtata in Marsascala should all be avoided entirely, while only confident swimmers – and no children – should venture into the sea at Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay.

Bathers keen to take a dip this public holiday can instead head to other beaches where conditions are more favourable, such as St George's Bay in St Julian's or Perched Beach in Buġibba.

The Red Cross reminded beachgoers that lifeguards were not obliged to dive into the sea at beaches flying two red flags, which represent a clear warning to swimmers to stay out of the water.

Rough seas made for bumpy tourist boat rides on Thursday, as this video sent in by a TImes of Malta reader shows.
