The quality of the seawater in two sites in Birżebbuġa has deteriorated, although it still remains within acceptable levels.

Health Minister Chris Fearne was asked a parliamentary question by MP Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi about the situation in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The Directorate for Environmental Health monitors six different sites in the town, based on weekly samples taken between mid-May and the third week in October.

The water quality in all six sites was found to be ‘excellent’ throughout 2016 and 2017, but at the beginning of 2018, two sites were found to have “good” or “sufficient” levels of microbes in the seawater.
Once the levels deteriorate further, the bays are closed – which had never happened in the three years covered by the PQ, Mr Fearne said.
