Spazju Kreattiv launched its major new art exhibition on Friday, with an event that celebrated the incredible diversity of the works on show. The exhibition forms part of the Spazju Kreattiv programme, and was produced in collaboration with Germany-based contemporary art organisation Ostrale Centre of Contemporary Art.

With pieces shipped in from all over the world – including European countries, Israel, Russia, China and beyond – Found ă Mentalism II presents video art, installations, ceramics, painting, photography and drawing, and highlights the conflicts and struggles around us, while shining a light on the possibility for a more positive future.

It is co-curated by Andrea Hilger and Antka Hofmann. Speaking at the launch, Spazju Kreattiv chairman Rupert Cefai said: “This exciting exhibition is the fruit of a long-standing collaboration with our European colleagues, Ostrale. Our alliance with this contemporary art biennale has been developed to further facilitate exchanges between artists based in Malta and in Germany. This project is the culmination of nearly two years of work and the results speak for themselves: an exhibition spanning two months and occupying all spaces within the St James Cavalier building.”

Spazju Kreattiv and the Ostrale Centre for Contemporary Art chose to collaborate because of a shared interest in cross-border projects. Together they have worked to develop an open cultural landscape where different artistic positions engage in dialogue with one another.

“In collaborating with Ostrale, we are opening this cultural landscape even further,” says Spazju Kreattiv artistic director Toni Sant, who also addressed guests at the launch. “And we look forward to continuing this work next year, when, as part of a long-term agreement between our two organisations, Maltese contemporary artists will be exhibiting their work alongside other international practitioners at the Ostrale Biennale for Contemporary Art in Germany in 2019. This collaboration will allow Spazju Kreattiv to further internationalise our work, and establish our presence outside Malta.”

Interested artists are invited to forward their proposals to participate in the project by June 15, by going to www.kreattivita.org/en/event/ostrale019-cfp/. Now open, the ‘Found ă mentalism II’ exhibition will take place throughout Spazju Kreattiv, St James Cavalier, until July 29. Entrance is free.
