A body found washed up near Ċirkewwa on Saturday has been identified as belonging to a man reported missing earlier this week.

Victor Caruana, 74, had been reported missing on Wednesday. He was last seen in Mosta.

In a statement released on Sunday, police said that they were calling off the search for Mr Caruana.

Although police did not link this announcement to the discovery of a body in Marfa near Ċirkewwa, sources told Times of Malta that investigators were now sure that the corpse was that of Mr Caruana.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place early next week.
