Air Malta will once again start flying to German cities Hamburg and Leipzig as of next winter, the airline announced on Sunday. 

The revived routes are the result of a partnership with German tour operator FTI.
 
Malta’s national airline will begin a once-a-week Wednesday service to and from the two metropolitan centres on October 31, resuming flights to cities it once served until it drastically cut its flight route network some years back.

Once the two reintroduced routes are operational, Air Malta will be serving five German cities.

“Over the years we have operated a number of charter flights to both German cities and we believe that with the support of FTI through seat commitments we can transform this route to an all year-round scheduled operation and we over time can grow frequency,” said Air Malta chief commercial officer Paul Sies.

FTI’s Beppe Bugeja welcomed Air Malta’s decision to re-enter the Hamburg and Leipzig markets, saying that the decision to bring the routes “back to life” was the result of a strong partnership between FTI and the airline.

Air Malta chairman chairman Charles Mangion said talks to reintroduce the routes began last November during the World Travel Market in London, while Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi highlighted Air Malta’s introduction of 17 new direct services and three intra-European flights in less than a year.
