In 2016, songwriting sister duo The New Victorians presented Mara – an audio-theatrical production that played to four sold-out houses at Teatru Manoel Studio Theatre.

This summer, Mara is back with new women, new stories and new music, playing for two nights only in Malta, before heading off to the National Theatre of Scotland’s Exchange Festival.

Mara is an original, multidisciplinary piece of theatre that celebrates the story of women through time by means of sound manipulation and electro-acoustic music, performed live by The New Victorians.

Starring an all-new female cast including Tina Rizzo, Michela Farrugia, Stephanie Bonnici, Sandie von Brockdorff, Becky Brincat, Julienne Restall, Kay Lee Micallef and Ilenia Gatt, the work was devised with the company, and composed and directed by The New Victorians.

From inventors, scientists, artists and activists, to musicians, politicians, writers, fighters, and mothers, MARA is a journey through time, highlighting the fact that every story is worth telling, and that no voice should be silenced.

Mara will be performed at the Exchange Festival in July, which brings together young theatre-makers, aged 16 to 25 years old, from the UK and beyond.

Now in its ninth year, Exchange facilitates national and international groups to create and perform new pieces of theatre with the support of a professional creative team.

Ten groups have been selected to take part, eight from the UK, and two international groups, with the Maltese cast being one of them.

This residential week will see the participating companies working with leading Scottish creatives to develop their skills through workshops, master classes, discussions, forums and broadcast of all the activity online Exchange TV.

Mara will be performed in Malta on June 22 and 23 at the Valletta Campus Theatre (ex-MITP) at 8pm. Tickets for the performance can be found online at www.thenewvictoriansmusic.com/tickets.

The project is supported by the Malta Tourism Authority, Valletta 2018, the University of Malta School of Performing Arts, the Mackintosh Foundation and Fino.
