Europe Day – the anniversary of the Robert Schuman declaration that helped launch the European Union – was recently commemorated by several events organised by the University of Malta’s Institute for European Studies and the European Direct Information Centre (EDIC) hosted by the institute at the University’s Msida campus.

A panel discussion on the European identity was held between MEPs Alfred Sant and Roberta Metsola, institute director Mark Harwood and Neil Portelli, director of EU policy and legislation at the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee (Meusac).

Over 100 students participated in the EDIC – University’s first ‘Europe Day’ quiz night at Is-Suq tal-Belt in Valletta, answering questions on topics such as the EU, the Eurovision, the Champions League and European cinema. The ‘Alfred Sant kellu raġun’ team won the first prize of four €100 travel vouchers.

The institute took part in a European Food Festival organised by Jef Malta, the European Documentation Centre at the institute hosted Jef’s ‘European Identity’ workshop, and the EDIC – University also sponsored a ‘Vino e Vino’ event on campus.

The EDIC – University, which  was launched earlier this year on campus, forms part of the network of Europe Direct centres across the continent that provide information, answer questions and organise events related to the EU.
