It is the policy of Malta Marittima to assist and support innovative and creative individuals to succeed. In congruence with this philosophy, Malta Marittima Agency, in collaboration with the University of Malta, launched the Maritime Proof of Concept in 2017.

The adopted brand name for the scheme is MarSA (Maritime Seed Award). The primary scope behind the scheme is to help move forward promising ideas towards commercialisation, with the ultimate aim of generating blue growth in Malta. The Maritime Proof of Concept Fund is designed to facilitate innovation and the creation of science-based business ideas in the marine field through research in the University of Malta, aiming for commercialisation.

The idea behind this fund is to encourage academics, entrepreneurs and students with creative and innovative ideas to get the financial support necessary to enable them to develop their ideas into business concepts.

The fund of €100,000 annually aims to reduce the gap between the laboratory and initial development market and to provide support for researchers and entrepreneurs. Scientific research does not only imply academic opportunities but it also creates vast and various job opportunities in the maritime sector which can harmonise growth within the Blue Economy.

The first call for applications was launched in March 2017 and the first batch of beneficiaries were awarded. The projects awarded are diverse in their nature, starting from floating wind turbines and photovoltaics, to an emergency device for seawater osmosis, to an eco-tourism service. These projects unequivocally demonstrate the potential and the talents, which with some financial assistance can develop excellent business concepts.

Building on the success of past projects, Malta Marittima Agency is looking forward to launching the next call for applications in September. Malta Marittima encourages prospective candidates to apply and to maximise on this opportunity that may see their hard work and innovative concepts be partly financed, leading to commercialisation.
