Investigators looking into Wednesday’s bomb in Għargħur are expecting more information from the victim to ascertain certain details which remain a mystery in their minds.

Primarily, the police want to try establish whether Kevin Ellul, 43, was the intended target or whether the target was meant to be someone else at another location.

The blast at a farm in Triq l-Isqof Gargallo, Għargħur, was heard over a wide area at 3.05pm on Wednesday. Mr Ellul suffered serious injuries, particularly to his torso and face.

Informed sources said two other men had also been on the scene. One of them is being questioned by the police but the other one left the scene and is still being sought by the police.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department and medical personnel were deployed to the scene and helped pull the man from the debris. Mr Ellul, who was known to the police, is said to be in a stable condition.

Investigators and members of the army’s Bomb Disposal Unit spent all day at the scene yesterday. Several trucks were used to transport part of the room that collapsed due to the blast. They were taken away for forensic testing.

The area is still being treated as a crime scene and few people are being allowed to enter freely. Even residents of nearby houses do not have free access.

Sources said investigators are not excluding anything at this point, including that the bomb was being manufactured inside the room.

Two cars which were parked nearby were damaged. One had a smashed windscreen. These have not yet been removed from the site of the explosion.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli is holding an inquiry with the assistance of a number of experts.
