How did the band get together and how long has it been?

The band was conceived in 2015 by Kevin and Tom; James and myself joined in 2016.

How do you describe your style?

We do not have one particular style. However, our debut album The Last Fandango, mainly took us towards a Western/desert style rock inspired by the movies of Quentin Tarantino, and all the spaghetti western we loved as kids. But, there are nine songs on the album which all have their unique character.

You keep a good balance between covers and original material – what can we expect from your gig today?

We’re going to blast out the favourites from our album, including a cover we’ve done particularly for the night. And, of course we’re definitely going to play some covers which we already know the crowd love and will definitely get everyone moving.

What’s this story behind the names Hunting and Cain?

No lying, we really took our time with this, and you asked the right question. There was no correlation between Hunting, and Cain originally. But through some research I stumbled upon a painting by Peter Nicolai Arbo, called The Wild Hunt, which is thought of as some harbinger of catastrophe like a war or plague. It depicts  a cavalcade atop a battlefield, with creatures and mythological figures from the past, juxtaposed with the modern era.

Seeing as our concept wasn’t just 'the desert', but also 'the desert meeting creatures of the night' (think Rodriguez's and Tarantino’s From Dusk till Dawn”), we went with the idea of personifying Cain as the eternal hunted and damned. Sort of like the original Dracula, or Wolfman.

You recently launched your debut album – how was it received?

We did not expect such a strong response. We worked hard to promote it, and found it to be very difficult on social media especially since we somewhat cut ourselves off from the outside scene while actually recording. We didn’t have a lot of external input. I went to our launch expecting the usual 30 faces in attendance, but much to my surprise there were so many people from different nationalities, different backgrounds, dancing to our beloved Somebody. People of all shapes and sizes, with diverse music tastes that ranged from ska to reggae and death metal.

Do you have a favourite from the album?

It’s hard to choose a favourite but, of course, we all have our choice. Mine is Somebody, because it was our first one. And Messing with You, because it embodies the idea behind the name Hunting Cain. There's also Cruel Woman because it’s just a pleasure hearing it.

What’s next for the band?

We are a band of dreamers and we theorise and plan a lot of things. However, we also all have our personal commitments, which makes it quite hard for us to translate some of these things to reality.

Having said that, we’re definitely going to deliver more new songs and try to increase our fan base, as our primary aim is to make our music heard. More studio time, and we also are looking at releasing a couple of music videos.

Hunting Cain perform tonight, June 25 at Funky Monkey, Gżira.
