Less than a year since entering the European Parliament, Francis Zammit Dimech has been appointed rapporteur of two dossiers by his political grouping.

Dr Zammit Dimech, who became a European parliamentarian last July after Therese Comodini Cachia was elected into Malta’s parliament during Malta’s 2017 general election, will now take charge of files concerning workers’ health and mobility on behalf of the European People’s Party.

The first file deals with the protection of workers from risks related to the exposure to carcinogens or mutagens while at the work, with MEPs keen to extend existing protections and revise exposure limit values. The second seeks to establish a European Labour Authority, which would ensure that EU-wide rules for workers switching jobs are fair, simple and evenly enforced.

As EPP group rapporteur for the two subjects, Dr Zammit Dimech will be responsible for drafting reports on MEPs' proposals for the two dossiers on behalf of the European Parliament’s single largest political grouping.

“Through these two new appointments, I will continue to work to safeguard workers’ rights in Malta and Gozo,” the MEP said.

Dr Zammit Dimech, who serves on the European Parliament’s Committe on Legal Affairs, is also working on a file dealing with working conditions of employees.

The report focuses on probation periods, working hours, work training and rules concerning parallel employment.

As part of that work, Dr Zammit Dimech will be meeting stakeholders to hear their views and better understand their needs on June 18 at the European Parliament’s Valletta office. The meeting will be held at 11.30am.
