Parking at Mater Dei hospital should be cheaper once the government concludes a new agreement for the service, Health Minister Chris Fearne said.

Replying to a question by MP Godfrey Farrugia, he said that the current contract had been signed in January 2008, established at €0.80 for 30-60 minute stays, €1.65c for a 1-2 hour stay, and up to €4.10 for anything over eight hours.

However, the agreement had actually specified that the government should pay the contractor for servicing and maintenance of the equipment used.

A new contract is currently being negotiated where the new operator would be responsible for the management of the car parks, including maintenance, and that the government would get a share of the revenue.

It would also guarantee cheaper rates for public parking, he said.
