As an assiduous reader of this newspaper, I have read both Mark Sant’s article about IVF and Martin Scicluna’s about the cannabis issue, a month or so before. They both expertly and technically succeeded in drawing a balanced picture of the pros and cons of the respective subjects.

I, therefore, take an imaginative line of thought and consider the moral issues as a needle football match final that requires an efficient referee to match the occasion.

As a Catholic, I would appoint the Catholic Church as the official in charge to denote the appropriate measures to be taken.

And so should our MPs, because nobody has renounced his Catholic faith so far, even though their proposed amendments and past enacted laws were not always compatible with the Church’s teaching.

Have we already forgotten the warning and concern of Pope Francis and Patriarch Kyril (spiritual leader of 125 million Orthodox Christians) on February 15, 2016, when they met and issued a joint statement about the development of biomedical reproduction technology, the embryo freezing issue and manipulation of human life?

Yes, I expect our parliamentarians to legislate in accordance with Catholic doctrine once all MPs are still members of this universal experienced spiritual club and not only occupy the front seats in church when invited to Mass or some other function.
