The Gift of Life Foundation has called on Speaker Anġlu Farrugia to launch an independent investigation into why a parliamentary petition for people to voice their opposition to embryo freezing had become impossible to sign.

The foundation said the Speaker should investigate the Malta Information Technology Authority and any other entity or individual who could shed clarity on this disturbing situation.

It noted that although many had managed to sign the petition and it was commendable, it seemed that in the last three weeks, it had become utterly impossible to sign.

The petition, which was filed on April 3 by Emanuela Cachia, calls on MPs to ensure the Embryo Protection Act is not amended, saying plans to allow embryos to be frozen would violate the right to life.

More than 8,500 signatures have been collected.
