They say driving is an art, but some drivers only master the art of careless driving due to the lack of supervision on our roads.

Drivers come in all sorts of characters, once you hit the road you’ve joined an assortment of them, from learners to hot heads, impatient, careless, colour blind, slow and nervous.

The character of the driver comes out in the way one drives. Take the bully driver for instance, he doesn’t hold up traffic, as he drives full speed ahead through any opening he manages to find, but he could easily cause an accident with other drivers, who are unaware of his ‘Formula One’ tactics.

Slow drivers hold up others who may be in a hurry and are the worst you can encounter, especially on a busy day. If an impatient driver happens to be behind one of these culprits it becomes a recipe for disaster.

By ignoring others behind them, careless drivers who fail to switch on their indicators are the ones responsible drivers can’t stand most. Wardens could make a fortune for Transport Malta if they stand at corners to fine the offenders who fail to use their indicators. This type of driver got used to breaking the rules so much that he doesn’t bother to change. So ingrained is his bad habit through lack of supervision that he will only change his ways if he is slapped with a stiff fine.

The striped box sign in an intersection is one sign many drivers are confused about, as either side road users expect to be given the right of way on their way out into the main road, or else some main road users even give way to those exiting the side streets, when they have no right to do so in both instances. The only purpose of the striped box signs are to inform drivers to leave the area unobstructed at all times, when traffic is accumulating in the area.

Of course policemen and wardens cannot be everywhere all the time, but there must be a way to instill some discipline over those who believe they can drive any way they please, with no respect at all for other road users.

Observing the rules makes driving safe and common sense makes it more efficient.
