Mark Anthony Falzon (‘The green festival that isn’t’, The Sunday Times of Malta, May 13) gives us food for thought. He evaluates the performance of Peter Calamatta and the Environmental Landscapes Consortium (ELC). Prof. Falzon says that what the ELC does is labour-intensive, wasteful of resources and completely out of touch with natural ecosystems. He points to what has happened at San Anton.

It really does seem as he says, that the ELC is a missed chance to develop methods of gardening that complement natural ecosystems and respect the realities of Malta’s climate and resources, and that the astonishing turnaround of plants everywhere within ELC’s range is geared towards higher profits. To ELC of course, while we and the environment, yet again, pay the price.
