In the spring of 1968, 100 students from the four Form V classes of St Aloysius’ College said goodbye to the school which they had attended for the previous five years (or seven years, for those who had also attended prep-school).

Fifty-three of them turned up again at the college to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their school-leaving. The event, held with the kind permission of the current Rector, Fr Jimmy Bartolo SJ, was the brainchild of Paul Gauci Maistre (who had also previously organised the 30th and 40th school reunions), helped by Alex Aquilina, while Victor Bonello handled the catering side of the event.

The reunion began with Holy Mass celebrated in the inner chapel by Fr Paul Deguara SJ, during which those from the 1968 cohort who have since passed away were also remembered: Pierre Muscat, Paul Bonnici Mallia, Patrick Attard, Wilfred Borg, Walter Caruana, George Mifsud Chircop and Joseph Micallef.

Afterwards the former Aloysians, many of whom accompanied by their spouses, proceeded to the foyer of the college theatre where a reception was held for all those present, who numbered 93.

The Old Boys attending the event were: Antoine Agius, Charles Attard Bezzina, Patrick Anastasi, Victor Anastasi, Alex Aquilina, Anton Azzopardi, Charles Balzan, Mario Bonello, Victor Bonello, Martin Bonnici, Charles Borg (Gauda), Charles Borg (Borg Coffee), Daniel Borg, Paul Bugeja, William Buttigieg, John Cachia, Lino Casapinta, Pierre Cauchi, Brian Ciappara, Joseph Coppini, Joseph Debono, Vincent De Gaetano, Ray Demicoli, John Depares, Simon Fenech, Paul Gauci Maistre, Brian German, Joseph Grech Sant, Christopher Laferla, Ivan Micallef, John Micallef, Peter Paul Micallef, Stephen Mifsud, Lawrence Mizzi, Guido Mizzi, Joseph Muscat, Peter Muscat, Tony Pace Balzan, Julian Pace Bonello, Francis Pace Lupi, Josef Preziosi, Joseph Refalo, David Scicluna, Mario Spiteri Maempel, Paul Tabone, Philip Testaferrata Bonici, Stanley Vassallo, Norman Vella, Igino Xuereb, Ninu Zammit, John Zammit, Michael Zammit and Melvin Zammit.

Another 12 Old Boys were very keen on attending but could not do so because of prior commitments abroad or last-minute illness. All the participants agreed that the next reunion would not be held in 10 years’ time, but much earlier.
