Excavation works in the heart of St Paul's Bay turned the sea into a milky white colour on Saturday, angering residents and passers-by.

The excavation by the sea in the so-called Veċċja area, started around two weeks ago, with the laying of foundations for yet another project laid some days ago, according to residents.

"It just keeps growing... it now covers the entire swimming zone," a frustrated resident told Times of Malta

"This is blatant disregard for the environment. It's only cash which counts today. The fact the building is so close to the sea is a disgrace in itself not to mention the fact there appear to be no mitigation measures. Besides that, this is an official swimming zone."

The discharge was reported on Saturday just four days after works at a construction site in Balluta were stopped after the sea was also polluted.
