A construction site in South Street Valletta has cut through the remnants of what could turn out to be a sign of historic value.

A photo posted onto Facebook by an architect shows a garage opening near the former local council office, which has cut through a sign for Gieves outfitters.

The architect posted a message on Facebook saying she believed the sign may have belonged to an outlet of Gieves, Royal Navy Outfitters and Outfitters to the Royal Air Force, of Bond Street, London.

"Gieves had an outlet in Strada Reale (Republic Street), but based on adverts I found online, also in Strada Mezzodi (South Street)."

She said she had written to the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Planning Authority, and hoped that immediate action is taken.

Nine years ago, another sign - for the Victory Kitchen - had been saved on Melita Street and was subsequently restored.
