Malta is actively considering reappointing a resident ambassador in Lisbon, Foreign Minister Carmelo Abela said.

For the past six years, Malta’s ambassador to Portugal has been non-resident, and the Maltese embassy in the Portuguese capital has been manned by a Chargé d’Affaires.

He told his Portuguese counterpart that Malta also wished to have a Portuguese diplomatic presence in Malta once again, since Portugal’s embassy in Malta was closed in 2012. The Portuguese Embassy in Rome is now accredited to Malta.

The ministers met on Wednesday, on the margins of the President state visit to Portugal. They discussed political, economic, trade, and cultural bilateral relations, as well as foreign policy issues of interest to both countries.
