A top Israeli football team is marking Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the nation’s capital by changing its name.

Beitar Jerusalem will now be known as ‘Beitar Trump Jerusalem’, in honour of the US president’s move.

“We have the greatest love for the President, and it will win!” the club said in a statement on Facebook.

“Trump has shown courage, and true love of the Israeli people and their capital, and these days other countries are following his lead in giving Jerusalem its rightful status.”

Having announced the name change, the club must now register it with the Israeli football association and obtain permission from the Trump organisation to incorporate the US president’s name – a registered trademark – into their own.

Beitar Jerusalem are currently sitting in second place in the Israeli league and will play in next season’s Europa League.
