A new €3 million maritime training facility focusing on training for sailors and shore-based staff is being set up at Hal Far.

The facility targets personnel involved in merchant shipping cruise ship and the super yacht sectors.

Known as MaritimeMT, the centre which is under construction, is due to open its doors early next year. It will be run by the Malta Maritime Pilots Cooperative, which will provide some 50 accredited courses that service the global maritime industry.

The training centre will replace an existing training and research facility.
Details on this facility were announced this morning in a seminar which also focused on safety measures in Maltese ports.

Transport Minister Ian Borg commended the initiative while noting that these courses would herald more employment opportunities in the lucrative maritime sector.
