A project for the re-establishment of a sustainable breeding population of barn owls is well underway, the FKNK hunters' federation said on Tuesday.

FKNK is carrying out the project at Buskett using funds provided by the Ministry for the Environment through the Conservation of Wild Birds Funding Scheme. The project will see the release of captive-bred birds into the wild.

The federation said a number of aviaries are nearing completion. They will be installed near the converted farm known as Razzett tal-Bagħal in Buskett.

The Razzett tal-Bagħal, built by the knights in the 17th century, has been managed by the FKNK since 2015 and includes an interpretation centre, a hunting museum and meeting rooms.

It is used by bird-watchers, astronomers and photographers.
