Partit Demokratiku's social media team is to undergo training after the party uploaded a Facebook post which described a Labour MP as a "village escort".

The party will also be bolstering its written policies and codes of practice to provide clearer direction to party management and active members, after the misogynistic Facebook post had PD scrambling to apologise two weeks ago.

As well as removing the offensive post and issuing an apology, the party had also appointed an independent board of inquiry made up of Jo Caruana, Lizzie Eldridge and Michael Zammit Maempel to look into the incident.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party said that the inquiry had found that the "impulsive and poorly thought-out" post was uploaded by an individual within the party's social media team, who was not named by PD.

The post in question featured a video of a heated parliamentary debate concerning IVF legislative changes, during which PD MP and party secretary general Godfrey Farrugia was asked to leave the House.

PD had shared the video, which featured a thumbnail image of Labour MP and junior minister Julia Farrugia Portelli, with the comment "when village escorts become MP's [sic], you know the country is in the pits."

The post was quickly deleted as outrage snowballed.

Dr Farrugia said that the board of inquiry had recommended that the party bolster its written policies and guidelines.

“We now take on board the inquiry’s recommendation for training sessions and a robust public relations plan to reflect the work being done by PD to help develop the party, its messages and its policies," said Dr Farrugia.

“PD unequivocally condemns the language in question. It accepts that its publication was a grave error of judgement and shares a collective responsibility for it.”
