Champions Valletta secured their first signing of the close season with the capture of Italian striker Mario Fontanella.

Valletta, fresh from their memorable 2017-18 season, where they won the league and cup double for the eighth time in their club's history, have wasted little time to bolster their squad and reached an agreement to sign the prolific Fontanella.

The Italian striker have established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the BOV Premier League and last season he finished second in the scoring charts, only to Gżira's Amadou Samb, when netting 17 goals.

His contract with Floriana expired at the end of last season and Valletta immediately opened talks with the player who agreed to sign a three-year contract.

Fontanella is unlikely to be Valletta's only signing as it is understood that the club hierarchy will have a number of overseas players on trial when the team starts its pre-season on June 1.
