The second edition of Iż-Żejtun Taħt in-Nar will be held around Żejtun’s main square tomorrow from 9am till noon.

The activity marks the 76th anniversary of the tragedy that occurred in the square on May 2, 1942, during World War II when Luftwaffe Junkers 88 dropped a number of bombs,  including butterfly bombs, opposite the church and killed 27 parishoners. The façade of the church parvis still carries scars of the splinters from the bombs.

During the event, the square’s ambiance will be changed to resemble war times with various re-enactments by Battlefields Re-enactment Group and Malta Command. There will be displays of war vehicles, an old traditional Żejtun bus, war equipment and other items related to the times, and a commemoration of the victims. A mock-up of anti-explosive personnel disarming butterfly bombs and an exhibition of the Luftwaffe air crew and pilots’ uniforms and their equipment will also be displayed.

A Victory Kitchen distributing free meals will be set up by Żejtun Organisation to Empower You (ŻOEY).

Iż-Żejtun Taħt in-Nar takes place tomorrow from 9am to noon around Żejtun’s main square. For more information, call the local council on 2166 3866 or Sean Chircop on 9920 3815, or visit www.zejtunlocalcouncil.com.
