Thanks to Pope Francis, Satan and exorcism are back in vogue. A write-up in the Times of Malta on May 22, 2013, referred to “Francis’s obsession with the devil, a frequent subject of his homilies”. The Pope bestowed on Satan a great honour by calling him “the prince of this world”.

This prince was once the radiant Prince of Heaven. “Him the Almighty Power hurled headlong... to bottomless perdition, there to dwell in adamantine chains and penal fire.” Nevertheless, Satan escaped from those chains and fires and trespassed into the Garden of Eden, where he “deceived the Mother of Mankind” (John Milton, Paradise Lost).

The Times of Malta recently published a write-up about the “world’s most famous exorcist”, Fr Gabriele Amorth (April 23). Undeterred by countless exorcisms through the ages, Satan keeps coming back, even after Christ’s “redemption”. Christianity does Satan wondrous honour by crediting him with all the evil in the world.
