Two restored German silent films will be screened at the Embassy Cinema in Valletta on Friday and Saturday, accompanied by a German live jazz band.

Tomorrow, Tartuffe, a 64-minute comedy produced in 1926 by Erich Pommer, will be screened. A tartuffe is a character who hypocritically pretends to be pious and holier-than-thou but is really a scoundrel.

On Saturday, The Oyster Princess – a grotesque comedy about the marriage of the spoiled daughter of an American millionaire that does not go as planned – will be shown. The 60-minute silent film was directed in 1919 by Ernst Lubitsch.

The band Küspert & Colleagues, made up of Till Martin (saxophone), Dietmar Fuhr (double bass), Bastian Jütte (drums) and Werner Küspert (guitar and composer) will perform during the film screenings.

The event is organised by the German-Maltese Circle in collaboration with the Goethe Institute.

Tartuffe and The Oyster Princess will be shown at 8pm at the Embassy Cinema Complex, St Lucy Street, Valletta, tomorrow and on Saturday, respectively.  For tickets, call the box office on 2122 2225 or visit www.germanmaltesecircle.org/stummfilme.
