A young Maltese student will be heading to Scotland in July after being selected to participate in a worldwide conference to train and connect the next generation of global journalists.

Andrea Rossitto will be among the 100 promising media players attending the Future News Worldwide conference at the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, on July 5 and 6.

"I'm honoured and very excited about this opportunity," Mr Rossitto said. "It will be an opportunity to receive hands-on coaching from editors, broadcasters, reporters, and other experts."

Mr Rossitto is a University of Malta student who is also participating in a Valletta 2018-themed project run by the British Council, Capturing Valletta.

The project, which involves eight local students, seeks to raise the profile of Malta's capital during its European Capital of Culture year by highlighting the work and talent of young journalists such as Mr Rossitto.

Students contribute stories, videos and images to a blog on the British Council Malta website that profile UK-Maltese projects and themes during Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture’s programme.

"We're thrilled that Andrea will be taking part in Future News," a British Council spokesperson said. "Andrea and his fellow students go behind the scenes of the UK-Maltese projects at Valletta. Their blogs, videos and photos tell the story of artistic collaboration and innovation at Valletta 2018 through the eyes of young Maltese people."

The British Council's collaboration with the University of Malta comes as the UK cultural organisation marks its 80th year in Malta.

"There is a lot of interest at the moment in UK-Maltese educational collaborations," the Council spokesperson said. "The University of Malta joined us in March when we led a delegation of British university representatives to Malta to discuss future partnerships."

Founded in 1934, the British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, with a presence in over 100 countries. It is a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body.
