The Gozo diocese has been given €2.16m in EU funds to be invested in various parishes and communities around Gozo.

Conscious that cultural tourism is a national tourism priority, the diocese, through its Kura Association, is undertaking a cohesive plan to enhance its diverse cultural portfolio which would contribute towards the strengthening of the Gozitan cultural product.

It plans to restore seven architectural gems dating back hundreds of years, located within the centre of Gozitan rural villages and frequented by thousands of tourists every year. These include church paintings and organs.

It also wants to restore artefacts within various churches spread across Gozo, namely the Cathedral, Saint George’s Basilica, the parishes of Ta’ Kerċem, Għarb, Xagħra, Għasri, Fontana, Qala, and Ta’ Sannat, and the communities of Santa Luċija and Marsalforn.

The diocese wants to valorise the Cathedral Museum, which houses invaluable objets d’art, including papal artefacts and to strengthen the Don Bosco cultural arts centre which gained increasing popularity with tourists annually through its artistic performances.

A heritage trail is included in the project.

The funds were presented by EU funds parliamentary secretary Aaron Farrugia to project leader Noel Formosa.
