Organisations that worked with domestic violence victims were working together more in an attempt to offer better help to those who were abused, Equality Minister Helena Dalli said on Tuesday.

She was speaking during the unveiling of the annual report drawn up by the Commission on Domestic Violence, noting that last year marked a significant increase in the number of reports by men.

On Monday, the Times of Malta reported that according to police data, nearly one in four domestic violence reports lodged with the police were filed by men.

According to the data, the number of domestic violence reports by men increased steadily over the past years – from 144 out of 711 total reports in 2010, to 323 out of 1,378 last year.

Confirming the increase, Dr Dalli said that now that the Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence Act had been approved and would be enforceable in the coming days, there would be more justice.

She added, however, that the government had higher aims and would continue with its strategy against domestic violence launched in 2017.
