A giant sinkhole that opened up on a farm in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty on Monday (April 30) has revealed a 60,000-year-old volcanic deposit, local media reported.

Running along a fault line, the sinkhole opened after heavy rainfall in the area, and according to local broadcaster TVNZ, the length is around 200 meters (656 feet) with a width of 20 to 30 meters (65-98 feet).

While sinkholes are common in the area, the size of this sinkhole has excited the science community with volcanologist Bradley Scott calling it "pretty spectacular."

A worker stumbled on the chasm earlier this week when he was rounding up cows for milking.
