Developers should be subject to a point system similar to that used to penalise reckless drivers, the Malta Developers' Association has proposed.

Speaking at Castille, MDA president Sandro Chetcuti said such a system could be used to punish those who were in breach of Building Regulation Office rules.

Mr Chetcuti also proposed that a 2006 policy allowing old townhouses to be demolished should be repealed.

The MDA was presenting its proposals to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

“We get a lot of complaints from buyers, and most of them are correct - there are people who do not want to cooperate [and work within the rules],” Mr Chetcuti said.

PM welcomes MDA proposals

The MDA President expressed his support for the housing proposals made by the Prime Minister yesterday, and said the state should help those most vulnerable.

Dr Muscat used his speech during a PL Workers' Day rally to announce that the government planned on using €50 million from the sale of passports to build 500 social housing units.

The Prime Minister welcomed the MDA proposals, saying that the government would be reconsidering the 2006 policy and would look into its points system proposal.

Turning his attention to the development sector, he said there were scientific studies that showed there was sustainable development in Malta.

This is no construction bubble, as some would like to believe, the Prime Minister concluded.
