Valletta’s Grand Harbour may have seen its fair share of bombs, but the loud blasts of Monday evening were friendly and rather more colourful as the 17th edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival concluded in a spectacular manner.

Following shows in Gozo and Marsaxlokk, the third and final night of the festival kicked off with a concert featuring a brass band and singers, who performed live on a floating stage.

Singers performed a medley in memory of Tony ‘Bayzo’ Camilleri

They were accompanied by traditional fireworks such as blalen (spherical shells) and sfejjer (cylindrical shells), exhibited by the Lourdes Fireworks Factory, San Ġwann, St Philip’s Fireworks Factory, Żebbuġ and St Michael’s Fireworks Factory of Lija.

The crowd was also entertained by a pyro-musical show by Pyroemotions. Singers including Glen Vella and Amber performed a medley in memory of Tony ‘Bayzo’ Camilleri, along with tracks by various artists and the late Swedish DJ and producer Avicii.

There were four competing fireworks factories in the pyro-musical section.

The judges declared Rozzi Fireworks from the US to be the winners, followed by the St Mary’s Fireworks Factory of Għaxaq, Phoenix Fireworks from the UK and Martarello from Italy, in that order.
