Vox Dulcis Chorale will present a concert of medieval choral music as well as contemporary compositions based on medieval text on Saturday.

Some of the songs evoke the mystery of the Middle Ages, such as Praise to the Trinity by St Hildegard of Bingen, whereas other pieces present an almost romantic vision of Christian spirituality, as in A Prayer of St Richard of Chichester.

Compositions such as the Ave Maria from the Selden Manuscript anticipate the kind of texture found in later Renaissance writing, while plainchant melodies sung in unison reveal a transparent simplicity.

This concert also emphasises the wide scope of medieval sacred texts, from Gaelic runic inscriptions to prayers embraced by popular devotion.

The languages used include Old English and Latin, while some of the songs will be sung in modern English translation. Vox Dulcis Chorale is a newly-formed young women’s choir, singing a vast variety of repertoire.

The choir will sing under the direction of John Anthony Fsadni and the concert will be presented by Claire Grima.

This event forms part of the official programme for Medieval Mdina.

The concert will be held on Saturday at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Paul in Mdina at 7pm. Admission is free but donations at the door are welcome.
