I read in history books that Malta played a critical, strategic and important role several times. However, I never realised it was also a superpower, so much so that 18 news organisations (among these The New York Times, The Guardian and Reuters) got together to bring down this superpower. Even more, they are interested in bringing down the Labour government since it is the one that leads this superpower.

It is good to have self-confidence, self-awareness and pride in ourselves. However, how long can we keep saying it is all a lie? Hitler (not meaning to compare him to anyone) once said: “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” I don’t know what the whole truth is but these 18 news organisations must be onto something.

It is true that Malta is doing well economically, according to what I read. Low unemployment, budget surplus but is this at the cost of accountability, corrupt deals and corruption? We are doing well but will it be at the cost of our future generation?

To quote somebody more loved, Robert F. Kennedy said: “Our gross national product, now, is over $800 billion a year but that gross national product - if we judge the United States of America by that - counts for air pollution… and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage… Yet, the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children… It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials… it measures everything in short except that which makes life worthwhile.”
