District police have been handed ten new squad cars, with the Home Affairs Minister promising officers 50 more in the near future.

The €130,000 investment was unveiled by minister Michael Farrugia, police commissioner Lawrence Cutajar and police force CEO Angelo Gafa' outside Mellieħa police station on Saturday.

Dr Farrugia said that the police force would be undergoing substantial changes over the coming months, with the aim of strengthening community policing initiatives, upping the number of foot patrols and bringing police officers closer the communities they serve.

He said that measures to increase the number of officers patrolling key hotspots was working, with crime down in these areas, with target policing also proving effective.

The ceremony also marked the unveiling of the Malta police force's new branding.
