These last days, people were asking whether the Office of the Commissioner for Children was still functioning due to the deafening silence regarding the government’s decision (in the name of equality) to amend the law in favour of embryo freezing. Finally, silence was broken and we were informed the Commissioner for Children was in favour of the suggested amendments.

This is not a political issue. Here, we are dealing with human beings not objects and, as such, there should be no fiddling or messing about. Those of us who have the welfare of children at heart – born and unborn – were shocked.

How is it possible that a commissioner specifically responsible for the protection of children, born and unborn, is declaring her belief in favour of the freezing of embryos and the slaughter of the unborn child?

The government has no electoral mandate to change the existing law. This was confirmed by Minister Helena Dalli in New York when she openly declared the electorate was presented with a package prior to the last election. This means the electorate that voted Labour was tricked; was taken for a ride. The truth was ably hidden to the public by the Labour Administration.

Now, we also have the Association of Paediatricians expressing preoccupation at what the government is suggesting.

Does Pauline Miceli really believe what she stated or did she say it only to please whoever appointed her Commissioner for Children? What further proof does she need to realise that, by her affirmation of the proposed law, she is doing a great disservice to the office entrusted to her to safeguard her own children, our children and Maltese society?

Let us hope and pray that reason prevails and the government realises the harm and mayhem which will unfold if it pushes through the proposed amendments rather than take heed of what real experts on the subject have to say before it’s too late.
