Family Minister Michael Falzon dismissed revelations from the Daphne Project as “recycled stories meant to hurt the Labour Party”.

Dr Falzon was asked whether Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Keith Schembri, should step down like he had when The Sunday Times of Malta revealed his involvement in a government deal with Mark Gaffarena to expropriate land three years ago.

He quit his post as parliamentary secretary for lands in 2016.

However, Dr Falzon evaded questions on whether Dr Mizzi and Mr Schembri carried political responsibility, saying only that he carried political responsibility for himself.

He insisted that “the sacrosanct truth” was that there were never any irregularities on his part and that he carried political responsibility. “My relationship within the party and the government is a very healthy one,” he said.

When pressed about whether Mr Schembri and Dr Mizzi carried political responsibility, he simply reiterated his answers.

“You keep asking me the same question and you are going to get the same answer. I think it is a shame that with positive results in poverty rates, we continue to speculate on recycled stories,” he said.

The backdoor dealings of Dr Mizzi and Mr Schembri are once again in the spotlight after the Daphne Project revealed the two men’s connections to the Dubai company 17 Black.

Leaked documents show that financial advisor Nexia BT said the company would be paying into their companies, Tillgate and Hearnville.

Mr Schembri and Dr Mizzi’s links to 17 Black have been questioned since slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia made reference to the company in February 2017.
