Suspect Alek Minassian, accused of driving a rental van into pedestrians on a crowded Toronto sidewalk, left a 'cryptic message' on social media before his attack which may provide clues to a motive.

Ten people were killed in the attack on Monday.

Facebook confirmed Minassian referenced a quote 'incel rebellion' -- a shorthand used in some online message boards for 'involuntary celibacy.'

The post also voiced admiration for 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, who killed six college students in California in 2014, and who was bent on revenge against women he believed had snubbed him sexually.

Acquaintances told Reuters Minassian attended a special needs high school. A former classmate recalled him as 'absolutely harmless,' walking the halls with his head down and occasionally making meowing noises.

Police said he had no prior contact with law enforcement.
