Road safety targets established in 2014 are "nowhere near expected" with fatalities and injuries caused by traffic collisions showing no sign in easing up, a doctors' safety group has warned. 

Doctors 4 Road Safety together with the Medical Association of Malta said they were "deeply concerned" by the lack of improvement in Malta's road safety record, and urged the government to give the matter the "highest priority on the national agenda."

"A definite solution is needed for this preventable epidemic," the groups said. 

The 2014 Malta Road Safety Strategy set the country a 10-year timeline to reduce traffic fatalities by 50 per cent, grievous injuries caused by traffic incidents by 30 per cent and slight injuries by 20 per cent. 

But statistics suggest these targets are nowhere near being met, with Eurostat finding earlier this month that Malta was the only EU country to register an increase in road fatalities.
